Can't Create Apple ID with a GMail email

Created a Gmail account yesterday and trying to use it to create an AppleID. I have received the error "Can't be completed at this time" or "Please contact iTunes Support to complete this transaction" when trying to create the ID directly via the App Store. Have tried on different devices and via device setup, Apple.com-AppleID and directly through the App Store. Nothing works. Any ideas?
