Airdrop failures from iPhone to MacAir

Recently every time I try to airdrop a photo from my iPhone to my laptop the airdop fails. I end up with a file that is ZERO bytes in size and is 'grayed out' in my finder. What is really bugging me is that I am unable to delete these empty files from my device. I have (re)searched trying to figure out how to delete these empty files but can't figure out how to do it.
