Why is the contact card now assigned by apple id and the phone number.
for years me and my husband have had one Apple ID and not experienced any issues. Now my contact id is being shared across multiple devices.
even if I switch off the contact card it is still being shared

It might seem unhelpful, but you DO need to stop sharing a common AppleID.
There have been a few security-related changes in the last decade.

Not really … it’s more accurately changing HOW that sharing is now technically implemented. (i.e. with Family Sharing)
Family Sharing was created in-part to reduce the significant security issues which sharing a common AppleID — which was indeed a common practice — had created.

It is not meant to share Apple ID’s. Apple ID’s are strictly personal and are not meant to be shared. If you want to share it you can better set up family sharing
Not helpful we have shared the same id for 10yrs
So the choice is taken away from us in respect of what we share with each other
I know how to remove a device I am not thick. My issue is my right to chose has been removed
