Why are markups on the Books app STILL disappearing

I just spent 2 and a half hours annotating, highlighting, and writing up notes on a textbook in my Books app on my iPad only to have the entirety of my notes and highlights disappear. Almost 3 hours of my work disappeared from the book and I can’t get it back. Looking online reveals that this is an issue for more than just me.

Is this the quality that Apple is providing now? We spend thousands of dollars for subpar apps that waste our time AND money? Why has this issue not been fixed? This is ridiculous from a company like Apple. A real shame.
