Partitioning System Drive, when Disk Utility fails

I have 10.5.8 installed on a PPC G5 iMac .

I need to re-partition the system drive, but Disk Utility fails in the task .

Is there any alternatives for this task ... Free of charge ?

Could for example GParted be used for this task and could I run it within the OS - not from a Live CD ?

The problem is you are trying to partition the disk you are curretly booted from.

You may be able to boot from an original 10.5 install disc as @BDAqua already suggested and then repartition the drive from there.

If not, and you have another Mac, put the 10.5.8 Mac into Target Disk Mode (hold the T key while booting); then connect the two Macs via Firewire. The 10.5.8 Mac will show up on the second Mac as an external disk. You should be able to repartition the disk using Disk Utility in the second Mac.
