iPad 10th Gen WiFi Problem.

Do any of you 10th Gen iPad owners have any issues with the device disconnecting from WiFi when it goes to sleep? Mine is driving me nuts! Either it eventually reconnects on its own or I have to restart it again to get the connection back. The WiFi icon is still always showing when the connection is lost. My iPhone SE is absolutely fine and still has the connection when the iPad has dropped out. My partner’s iPad and her iPhone are also fine. It’s even more frustrating because it’s inconsistent. Some days it happens a few times each day and then the next day it might not happen at all.

I’ve switched off the private WiFi address option - Reset my router - changed my router channels - auto join is always enabled - reset the network settings numerous times and still no change - it’s running the latest OS 17.5.1 - I’ve gone through the remote diagnostics process via the Apple Helpline and they couldn’t see any issues. I’ve since questioned the router people and they say that it won’t be a router issue because the other devices connected aren’t being affected which sounds fair enough to me.

I just wondered if it was a 10th gen iPad thing or do I maybe have a faulty device?

While acknowledging your confidence in the WiFi Router not being a potential source of the issue - as a diagnostic exercise you may find that a restart of your WiFi Router, followed by a restart of your iPad might clear the problem….

To restart your router, disconnect power from the router for at least 30 seconds - then reconnect power to restart. After your router reboots (which may take several minutes), force restart your iPad:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

If the problem persists after performing the restart, it may be necessary to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, the next step is to reset the iPad to factory settings:

Otherwise, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad:

If the iPad disconnects when idle (sleep/locked) you may need to verify the your WiFi Settings for each of your configured WiFi Networks - ensuring that they are set to Auto Join:

Settings > WiFi > [WiFi Network / SSID] - tap the “i” icon - set Auto-Join to ON

Unless Auto-Join is enabled, your iPad will not automatically reconnect to the WiFi network when resuming from sleep - or when coming into range of your WiFi network.

Auto-Join is enabled/disabled for each configured WiFi network.

Do you have any VPN or security Apps (e.g., Norton) installed on your iPad? If so, as a diagnostic exercise, try deleting them from your iPad. The Apps are often the cause of WiFi/internet connection issues. Simply temporarily removing these Apps can resolve the problem.
