How to erase and reformat my old Western Digital 1TB HDD for M3 iMac

I have a Western Digital 1TB HDD that was last used as a Time Machine Back-up around 2015 or so. I'd like to erase the disk as there is nothing on it that will run on my M3 iMac (OS 14.5). I've got see the Smartware virtual disk image on the screen, but I cannot find the "Retrieve Tab" it mentions.

I don't mind reformatting the disk, but I can't figure out a way to do that. Y'all are smarter than I when it comes to all things Mac, so any help or direction would be very much appreciated. If the disk proves unrecoverable, I don't mind buying a new one, but I'd rather reuse the old disk.

See if you can see the WD drive in Disk Utility with the option to show all devices:

Then erase the container with the format either APFS or OS X Extended (journaled) with GUID partition.

If you installed any of the WD software that comes with their drives uninstall then according to the developer's instructions. It's not needed and can interfere with the systems file system management.

Plug the WD drive in to the USB port that you will be using, I’m assuming it’s USB A but some use Usb C to A adapter, Open the disk utility app, Click on the disk, Go to erase, Select APFS, give it the name you want. And select what type of erase security you want done. There’s 4 total options. Level 1-4. The higher the level the longer it will take to erase.

i have a WD passport I just erased using an M series Mac and if you use an adapter and erase it from a thunderbolt 4 port it will speed up the erase process on higher level/more secure disk clean ups.

I would like to thank everyone who contributed. I had a couple thousand scanned photos that I really wanted to recover and not have to scan again. Disk Utilities gave me enough access to glean what I needed off the old disc. I knew the community would have an answer, and you did. (BTW I think I need a better file system for photo originals other than dumping them in a plastic tub.) How do I show this as answered?
