Overheating has a very specific meaning. It means you get a big warning on the screen with a yellow error sign and all you can do is make an emergency call until the phone has cooled off. Is that what you're seeing?

If, however, you're seeing a notification that the phone has paused charging until it cools off, it is not overheating. That's just the phone notifying you that Optimized Battery Charging is doing what it's supposed to do.

These are the recommended temperature ranges for an iPhone:

Operating ambient temperature: 32° to 95° F (0° to 35° C)

Nonoperating temperature: −4° to 113° F (−20° to 45° C)

You may find that in a closed car in the sun while you're using Maps, the phone will overheat. Overheating has a very specific meaning. Always charge your phone in a well-ventilated area and only on a hard surface like a table.
