How to fix an inactive cursor in iMail without shutting down?

This has happened when in iMail. Cursor will move but will not highlight mail item. I does not seem to be active, yet it will shut down iMail. Is there some way to fix it without shutting down the computer?

Safe Mode is a fundamental troubleshooting step. It will require a shutdown; technically just a reboot, but there is no effective difference between the two.

I understand the cursor becomes unresponsive, but that obviously shouldn't happen to begin with. Until we can determine the cause we won't know how to restore its operation. Safe Mode is just the first step.
