Do not dispute the Apple Pay charge at the gas station. Disputing a hold (charge) can result in a fraud issue that could result in accounts being permanently closed.
Apple Cash is a prepaid debit card. When debit or credit cards are used at gas stations, they typically add a hold for additional funds. This is meant to protect station owners from fraudulent credit card usage and drive away fill ups.
If you go inside the station, you can prepay the exact amount and avoid the deposit many stations collect.
