Mac Studio running Sonoma trying to read off external drive for music

Every time I try to make music look at my external drive with my old iTunes Library on, it ends up loading everything onto my new internal drive on my Mac Studio... even when I hold Option on bootup of Music and choosing the specific path to the external, and also under settings/Files... and everytime I look here or anywhere via Google or anything, the latest person talking about this is 2022 !

Try turning off the 'Copy files to Music Media folder when adding to library' in Settings/Files.

Could you possibly restate your dilemma so that:

'what you are trying to accomplish' AND

'what happens instead'
