Does the handcycling activity on Apple Watch count movement during the workout as steps?

As many people have complained before, when I crochet it counts as steps on my Apple Watch. I know you can manually turn off fitness tracking or take the watch off entirely, but I’m looking for another way.

I see an exercise activity called handcycling is available, and it depicts a person sitting and moving just their arms.

I’m wondering whether this activity counts arm movements as steps still? That wouldn’t make much sense, since the idea is to be sitting and rotating your arms.

Hoping this might be a workaround to avoid artificially inflating my daily step count.

TLDR- does the hand cycling activity still count steps?
