How to transfer Apple Music Playlists to non-Apple Devices

I've seen this question in several guises and various answers. Thought I'd add my solution...

My main music database is Apple Music on my Mac. When I'm mobile I like to use one of my Sony music MP3 players, but creating and maintaining playlists on the player itself is difficult. First time I tried exporting a playlist from Apple Music the playlist file copied over, but didn't work. The problem is that many non-Apple devices require a Unix line feed in the file, but that option isn't available when exporting.

I use BBEdit text editor, and all that's required is to open the Apple playlist file in BBEdit, and then save the file with the Unix LF option.

A second problem I have is that all on my Sony MP3 players music needs to sit under a MUSIC root directory, and that's not how I have my Apple music configured - I have quite a long file path and don't want to change it on the Mac. With the Mac I can use a couple of keystrokes in BBEdit to highlight the (unwanted) path up to Album Title, find all instances of the unwanted path in the playlist, and delete. Save the playlist file (using Unix LF if not already in that format) and transfer it to the device Music folder.

From exporting the original Apple playlist to having a usable playlist on another device takes no more than a couple of minutes, regardless of how many tracks it contains.

iMac 27″, macOS 14.5
