SD Card not recognized on MacBook Pro 2019 running macOS Sonoma 14.5

I have two MacBook Pro's dated 2012 and my 2nd 2019 I have recently bought a SanDisk SD Card 128 GB which is recognised on my older MacBook but not on my 2019 model. I have searched on line and tried all solutions suggested but none have resolved the issue. I updated to Sonoma 14.5 recently and wonder if there could be an issue there.....any help welcome. Thanks

Simply the fact that the device I am using connects to my laptop via a cable (I wasn't aware of this as I hadn't spotted the USB C port on the device) so no requirement to remove the SD card from the device.

The MacBook Pro's dated 2012 at best could run macOS 10.15 Catalina with dates back to October 7, 2019

The current MacBook Pro from 2019 can and does run Sonoma 14.5

This machine does support >>

Four Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports with support for:

  • Charging
  • DisplayPort
  • Thunderbolt (up to 40Gb/s)
  • USB 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 10Gb/s)

So this unfortunately leads us the the Adapter / Card Reader

Some background that became apparent in macOS 12 Monterey

USB Powered or USB Self Powered Hubs become a hot issue in those days

The issue there was the Chip Set ( In the Third Party Hub ) and not the Operating System itself

Extend this forwards to today on MacBook Pro from 2019 running Sonoma 14.5 as it relates the Adapter / Card Reader

Are are speaking of this machine ?

MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019) - Technical Specifications

The only common denominators are 1 - SD Card itself 2 - possible the External Adapter / Card Reader 3 - how the Adapter / Card Reader is connected to the 2019 MacBook Pro

Disconnect all non essential external drives

Connect the Adapter / Card Reader Directly to the computer

Good

As a Test, take any Thumb Drive you can afford to Reformat

Understand, whatever is on the drive will be lost

Connect the Thumb Drive to the 2019 MBP and use Disk Utilities to reformat the drive say in the APFS / GUID format or in the older HFS Journaled / GUID format

Once do, proper unmet the drive

The move that same Thumb Drive to the older 2012 MBP.

Does the drive bet recognized on both computers despite both computer are running to Different version of macOS

One being probably macOS 10.15 Catalina and the newer MBP 2019 running Sonoma version 14.5.

What is the outcome ?

I see, SD Card from a Camera.

No doubt the Camera was used to Format the SD Card ?

If so, the SD Card format can be unique to the Make and Model of the Camera

This may require exploring, with the maker of this camera, if some Manufacture supplied Software is Required to make the drive recognizable in macOS Sonoma

Not unlike hardwares used on Ms Windows computers, the Native Drive format in windows is NTFS format

In that specific case, the drive is viewable and the files can be Read on macOS.

The problem is, one can not Write to the drive without Third Party Software installed and used on the Apple Computer

If we extend this idea to the SD Card from camera, sure the SD Card may not appear when connected to the computer running macOS Sonoma

Yes, my 2019 laptop is the 16-inch as you describe! Further.....I have two SD cards one of them works fine in the external adapter. I have tried both cards in the same adapter via all the 4 ports my older SD Card works fine but the new SanDisk doesn't but yet it works in the SD card slot of my 2012 laptop. The you say 'disconnect all non essential external drives'. I don't use any other external drives AND when you suggest 'Connect the adapter / Card Reader Directly to the computer'. The only method I know is vis the USB C ports of which there are 4 - I have tried each of them.

Let us drill down a bit more

The problematic SD card purchased two days ago, when used on the same Problematic SD Carder reader.

Do we have this right so far ?

When used on the MacBook Pro 2012 - both the problematic SD Card and problematic Card Reader >> Does work ?
