Hello, i just bought iphone 13 last Tuesday. Today my phone was down at 27% but i want to use it more for urgent matter so I plugged it. However after it reached 40% my adapter started heating up as in too hot to touch. Im using a real apple adapter btw, 20w. Im just worried if that’s normal or not because I’ve never touched the adapter while charging since I bought the phone.

No, it would not be normal for the adapter to get so hot that you cannot comfortably touch it; however, they will get quite warm, when actively producing the necessary current to the phone.
One potential issue may be the battery in your phone may be suspect. That is, if it can no longer maintain, at least, an 80% charge capacity, it may need replacing.
Another thing to check would be if there are any foreign debris in the phone's Lightning port. Use a bright flashlight to check. Should there be any, use something like a toothpick to remove it.
