Final Cut Pro X, importing Final Cut Pro for iPad project results in odd error.

Howdy everyone!

I'm in the process of trying to import some projects from Final Cut Pro for iPad to Final Cut Pro X on my Mac mini. Everything is up to date, I'm positive. That being said, however, when I try to import the project file and go through all the steps, I get a weird error that says "The operation couldn't be completed. File exists" and nothing else other than a button to close the pop-up. Looking up the error on here or on search engines in general yields no results.

Has anyone else ever encountered this error?

EDIT FOR CLARIFICATION: I'm not trying to save these imported projects as libraries in the same place where the original project files are.

Alrighty! Special thanks to "Meg the Dog" for helping me figure this out! What they said is 100% on the money about how the drives need to be formatted. I went and reformatted the NVMe in my Mac mini's dock to APFS and that worked like a dream! So moving forward, because I need my main externals to all be ExFAT because Windows (hurray), I'll move the Final Cut Pro for iPad projects there and then port them into Final Cut Pro X on my Mac mini and save the new libraries to my external where all my libraries live.

I'm not clear exactly what you are doing. What has been working successfully for me is to

Edit on the iPad

Export a Final Cut For for iPad Project to a USB Stick via Files

Move the USB stick to the Mac and copy the project to the external drive I want it stored on

Launch FCP on the Mac and import the Final Cut Pro for iPad project from the location I had stored it

FCP gives me the option to store it (with the same name) where I want and I can choose the same external drive and it stores it there successfully.

I do not get the warning box you do.

The saved project is now an FCP bundle, where as the Final Cut Pro iPad Project is an FCP project:

Some thing to consider -

What is the format of the disc you are storing on? It should be APFS.

In Finder > Settings > Advanced is Show all filename extensions checked?

Different folders on the same hard drive. Different names in said different folders. Different names in the same folder. The works.

It only worked when I moved the iPad project files OFF the hard drive and onto a totally different drive

You should not save FCP libraries to ExFAT. Apple requires either APFS or HFS+. ExFAT doesn’t handle library bundles correctly.

Oh my god. It’s because it doesn’t like it when it exists on the SAME HARD DRIVE as the one you’re trying to make it into a library on WHAT?! This is literally NO WHERE IN THE DOCUMENTATION?!

Yep... Learned that the hard way... After a double reformat, my primary external drive is now APFS. Even Compressor was starting to give me issues about "not being able to locate (...) cluster" or whatever. Probably for the same reason.

Just a quick heads up: my NVMe in my Mac mini's dock was not formatted to be APFS, so I just did that and will report if that helps

I honestly don’t know what was the main cause. It might be the security thing but I dunno. All I know is that they have be on different hard drives entirely because it just didn’t like it when I tried having the whole thing done on one hard drive.
