Desktop folders on MacBook Air won't open

Since upgrading to Sonoma 14.5 on my M2 MacBook Air I can't open desktop folders, or the hard drive icon, either with a double click or by highlighting and hitting Command-O (or by going to the File menu, for that matter). Documents on the desktop open appropriately. I've rebooted and still can't open these folders/icons. Apps in the dock open as they should. Suggestions?

What about through the Finder favorites> Desktop....?

A SafeBoot Use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support will sort many anomalies

Does a quick disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, third party system modifications and system accelerations are disabled temporarily.

Login and test. Reboot as normal and test. Caches get rebuilt automatically.

This test will tell you if third party interference; most extensions etc are not loaded in safe boot mode.

(Kicking myself for not remembering to hold down the power key!)

I forced the shut down, went to safe mode and all worked, rebooted, and problem seems to be solved. So whatever it was shutting down was--as is the case so often--the solution.

Thank you, Leroy. I appreciate your quick reply and excellent suggestions.

I was going to go into safe mode but I can't even Shut Down or Log Out. I go to the Apple menu-->Shut Down, but nothing happens. Same with Log Out.

This is getting strange.

Thank you.

You can always force quit a shutdown by holding the power button/TouchID for ~6-10 sec.

Force Shut down your Mac.
