I am wondering what VPN apps users in this forum use with MacOS Sonoma.

If you subscribe to iCloud+ your best option is to use Private Relay which is provided and managed by Apple.

But first, why do you think you need to use a VPN? If you think it will protect your privacy or mask your presence on the internet you are wrong. VPNs do no such thing and are only as good as the reputation of the VPN provider.

The general consensus —

third party apps that are Cleaners/Optimizers/VPN/Anti-Virus

all known to cause issues on the macOS

A true VPN tunnel, for example between you and your job, or a Bank server would be of value, otherwise might be time to re-think the usage.

Unless you're using a true VPN tunnel, such as between you and your employer's, school's or bank's servers, they provide false security from a privacy standpoint.  Read these articles:  Pubic VPN's are anything but public and Security Risks: The Dangers of Using Free VPNs (eccu.edu) and can be a hindrance to system and app performance.

Just some food for thought.
