Hello West Coast Safety Supply,

Whenever a contact changes their name or photo (contact card) and has “Name & Photo Sharing” on, you’ll get that message at the top. All it means is they changed something on their end and if you want to match what they’ve changed you can! There is no security risk here, you can verify by opening their contact card in the Contacts app afterwards to verify.

I’m always cautions of links or attachments I receive via text or email. It’s not impossible, but generally opening a text or email from someone will not cause any harm to your device. “Zero-click” attacks are rare and are usually patched very quickly once Apple learns about them.

If you want to increase the security with an individual you’re in frequent contact with,

  1. Open Messages.
  2. Tap on any conversation (not a group chat).
  3. Tap on their Name at the top of your screen.
  4. Scroll to the bottom and make sure Advanced Message Security is on.

You can learn about this setting, how to set it up, and turn it on here - About iMessage Contact Key Verification - Apple Support. Both parties need to enable Contact Key Verification.

There is no risk in opening a text from someone. The only risk is from the information you provide this person if you do not know them and from a link that may point to a fake site that appears to be legitimate. The Contact Update message on the top of the screen is simply to update the Contact Info for a person that you probably already have in the Contacts app. Usually this is from a new photo that they are using for their Contact and you can choose to use it in your Contacts app or stick with the photo that you choose for identifying them.
