It's not possible to protects something against all harm. But, there are some things you can do to help limit harm. Carry it in a padded case or padded section of a larger bag. Don't spill liquid in it. Try not to drop it or drop anything on it. Don't close it if there is anything on the keyboard. Avoid letting cats chew on the corners of the display.

I've used nothing but MBPs and MBAs for years and never had this problem. Nor is it an especially common issue here on the forums.
