MacBook M2 Pro 14" - Rapid Battery Drain and Overheating in Sleep Mode

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing some issues with my MacBook M2 Pro 14" that I purchased 10 months ago, and I'm hoping to get some advice from the community.

Issues:

  1. Rapid Battery Drain in Sleep Mode: The battery drains quickly while the MacBook is in sleep mode, even when no applications are running.
  2. Overheating: The MacBook gets unusually hot even when I am only using Safari.

What I’ve Tried:

  • Updated macOS: Ensured the MacBook is running the latest version of macOS.
  • Checked Activity Monitor: Looked for any power-hungry applications and quit any unnecessary ones.
  • Adjusted Power Settings: Configured battery and power adapter settings.
  • Reset SMC: Followed the recommended procedure to reset the System Management Controller.
  • Ensured Proper Ventilation: Made sure the MacBook has proper airflow and is not obstructed.

Diagnostic Results:

I took the MacBook to an Apple Store for a diagnostic check, and they confirmed that there are no hardware or battery issues.

Still Facing Problems:

Despite taking these steps, the battery drain and overheating issues persist. Has anyone else experienced similar issues with their MacBook M2 Pro, and if so, how did you resolve them? Are there any other troubleshooting steps I should try?

I would greatly appreciate any advice or suggestions!

Thanks in advance for your help.

Best,

MacBook Pro 14″, macOS 14.5

None of the usual culprits are in the report, but you do have a lot of stuff installed using HomeBrew which I am not familiar. Any one of those items listed in the report could be causing your problem.

I also see a remnant of CleanMyMac updater in the report. If you had CMM installed, then who knows what it may have modified or damaged. CMM is notorious on this forum for being the source of most users' problems and is almost considered malware itself by how much it causes problems with macOS.

The crash report shows several crashes related to the APFS file system. So try running Disk Utility First Aid on the hidden Container. Within Disk Utility you may need to click "View" and select "Show All Devices" before the hidden Container appears on the left pane of Disk Utility. Even if First Aid says everything is "Ok", click "Show Details" and scroll back through the report to see if any unfixed errors are listed. If there are errors listed, then run First Aid again until they are gone. If they still remain, then try running First Aid while booted into Recovery Mode (again you may need to run First Aid several times), otherwise you will need to perform a clean install of macOS by first erasing the disk (aka "Volume Group) followed by reinstalling macOS & restoring from a backup.

WebKit had seven crashes. WebKit is associated with Safari and many of the online features of various apps on the system. And there are eight crashes of the Bluetooth Daemon. It seems the APFS Daemon & Bluetooth Daemon crashes both started on 5/23/24. What may have changed on that day?

It seems you installed some sort of FaceBook utility through HomeBrew. Perhaps that is contributing to the issues when you are using Safari & the WebKit crashes.

All of the following are unusual to see in an EtreCheck report. Unusual items are the most likely to be causing a problem. I have no idea whether Docker has any issues on macOS.

Make sure to disconnect all external devices in case one of them is causing a problem.
