MacOS Music app Songs, Artists and Albums missing but visible in Finder

Should the folders and files that are located in /Users/accountname/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/ match what is displayed in MacOS - Music.app?

I have determined that this is not the case with one of my Apple computers, there are many folders and files that are not present in the Music.app

How do I easily update the application so that  the artists, albums and songs appear in the Music.app?

The Mac OS operating system is 10.15.7 Catalina

Music.app is version 1.0.6.10

Mac mini, macOS 10.15

James,

That happens if your computer has audio files that (for whatever reason) have not been added to your Music library. Since that seems to be your case, you can go ahead and add them, per the following: Import music from a computer to Music on Mac - Apple Support

To add to ed's advice you might also try the Songs view and the menu command View > Show Filter Field. This adds an additional search box which may do better at searching your library.

See also Empty/corrupt iTunes/Music library after upgrade/crash - Apple Community. It may be that some automatic process to update or convert your library hasn't completed correctly. Apple Music won't automatically rescan the media folder for content it is unaware of, so if something has gone wrong you either have to revert to an older/backup copy of your library or reimport any media that is currently not listed.

James,

Well you avoided the common mistake of not setting the search to be in your own library. It is hard to say what is going on without knowing the history of what has been moved, etc., but please try the following:

  • Close Music and restart it.
  • I notice that your example search terms each contain a space. What happens if you search on "Special" or "Tour"?
  • Find one of the problem files in Finder, right-lick it and choose Open With > Music. When it starts playing , does Music go to an existing library entry or does it create a new one?

Thanks to both responders for your tips and pointers - much appreciated.

I have been looking at the directories / files that are present on the computer that has been giving me problems.

Basically, what I have done is to open my music in finder and with the Music app running and open to the Songs list, selecting either the Artist folder or the subfolder(s) for an Artist and dragging to the Music app.

It appears that this is solving many of my problems (but a tedious manual process is looming) - just worried that I might be creating duplicate files somewhere. So far, using the advanced search in Finder, duplicates do not seem to be appearing.

Thanks - will update the outcome when I'm further into the process.

Thanks for your response.

I forgot to mention that ALL of the audio files that are present on my computer were added to my computer over the years by either purchasing from the iTunes store or by importing my personal CDs into the iTunes or Music app.

The issue that I have is that there does not appear to any pattern for what albums / songs are or are not visible in the Music app.

I have included a screenshot from the computer where my Music app is located. I used the example of the "38 Special" artist and there is no entry in my Music app.

All of these albums were present at some time in the past, but now there is a random list of artist and albums that are not present.

Would love to have a way to restore my library to a former (complete) state, but it appears that this is only possible by dragging the missing folders to the app window, correct?

Thanks again for responding!!
