Unable to add a fingerprint (Sonoma on Intel Mac). It asks for admin password, then nothing happens

On the Touch ID and Password section of settings, there is a 'Add Fingerprint' section with a plus sign above it. If I press that plus sign, it asks for my admin password, which I provide, and then nothing happens.

If I press the plus button again, it asks for my admin password again, and nothing happens again.

There are some toggles below it, which require an admin password to shift, but after I provide it, it just shifts back. But I guess the the toggles are useless until there is a finger print.

Additional Details:

I used migration assistant from a Sonoma M2 mac to port my profile onto the intel mac, after the intel mac was wiped clean. When going through the setup, it never asked to set up a fingerprint, like it normally does with a mac setup.

You do not say what Intel Mac exactly, what macOS ?

On an Intel Machine you can try both...

Even though SMC controls the touchbar, the T2 Controller is responsible for TouchID so some USB is in play,

so this would be NVRAM (or reboot.) notice:

ioreg -p IOUSB

USB Device: Apple T2 Bus

USB Device: Touch Bar Backlight

USB Device: Touch Bar Display

USB Device: Apple T2 Controller

—resetting the System Management Controller Reset the SMC of your Mac - Apple Support

—resetting NVRAM/PRAM Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

(get at least two-three rounds of the chimes when holding the NVRAM Reset)

compare your results.
