Why does my iPhone show SOS and have a SIM locked error?

Yesterday, SOS appeared on my phone and the cellular no longer works. I am not trying to change carriers. When I looked under “Carrier Lock” it reads, “SIM locked’… I did not forget my password or have any other access issues. What is going on?

I think the above explains it all

SOS means that you have lost the cellular connection between your carrier's cell tower and your iPhone. This will happen if the carrier has a general outage on their system. AT&T was down here yesterday for a few hours, for example. Or,there may be an issue with your phone connecting to the carrier's network.

I assume that you have already powered off the iPhone, waited a minute, then powered it back up.

Temporarily, you will need to use another phone to contact your carrier and ask them to troubleshoot the issue from their end to get the cellular network connection working again.

If your phone has a SIM card, the carrier support folks may ask you to remove the SIM card and then re-insert it again.
