I'm trying to free up storage space on my iMac

I'm using iCloud, but see files I've stored there on my Mac. Ideally I would like to have the files on the cloud but not on my Mac. Is there a way to do this?

iMac 21.5″ 4K, macOS 10.14

You can turn on the Optimize Mac Storage option for iCloud Drive in Apple menu > System Settings (or Apple menu > System Preferences on older macOS versions) but that will only reduce the space used on the Mac if it is low on storage space. See the following screen shot from that setting:

There is a similar option for iCloud Photos in the Photos app Settings or Preferences. See information in Set up and use iCloud Photos - Apple Support

There is no option to completely exclude the iCloud data from your Mac storage.
