apple card transaction amount is higher than purchase amount

I’m new to Apple Card; maybe I missed something- thought there were no fees for purchases. I’m noticing that my purchase total is one amount, and my Apple Pay Apple Card transaction record shows a different (higher) amount for the purchase. Example: Instacart order total (inclusive of tax, fees, tip)= $36.14, Apple Card transaction record = $48.00. Explanation?

This is typical of many delivery services. Your credit card support team typically wouldn’t be aware of the reason, unless the person uses the service themselves. Support Team members can’t really see the pending charges until the merchant finalizes the charge.

>>Why is there a temporary authorization placed on my card?

We place a temporary authorization hold for a slightly higher amount than your estimated order total. Authorization hold amounts vary but are typically calculated at about 115% of the order total and rounded to the nearest $5 increment. This small difference accounts for potential changes in the final total due to added items, items replaced at a different price, and the actual weight of items. You could see more than 1 authorization hold on an order if adjustments made after checkout exceed the original authorization total amount, or if you place the order several days in advance of delivery and the original authorization hold expires prior to delivery.<<

That’s almost a $12 difference and certainly not part of any fee. Some merchants have started to charge extra for paying with a credit card but it’s usually 3%. Did you add a tip for the Instacart driver by chance? In either event it’s certainly not Apple doing this. I think Instacart is not accurate in their statement to you.

So I initiated contact with Apple via chat- wasn’t particularly helpful, went round in circles. BUT - shortly after that… the charge amount on my Apple Card changed so that it now matches the amount on my Instacart receipt. Imagine that. No explanation, but I guess my issue is now resolved.

Thanks for responses; helped me to at least confirm that there are not supposed to be fees associated with Apple Card use, and I didn’t just miss some fine print somewhere. Still no idea what that was all about, but… whatever. Certainly will be on the lookout for anything similar in the future.

Hi - thanks for responding with this information. I use Instacart regularly, never experienced this with them prior to using Apple Card. Surprised that the very nice person I spoke with from Instacart said nothing about this as a possible explanation; would have been helpful to know at the time and would have calmed me right tf down. Appreciate the legwork!
