Why does my phone create 2 photos from 1?

If I take a single picture on my 12 pro max, when I import them from my phone to my Imac there are now 2 pictures in 2 different sizes. I only took 1 picture but there are now 2 in photos. One is zoomed in and one is zoomed out. This is driving my crazy! Why does it upload 2 photos when I only took 1? Is there some kind of setting that is doing this?

Photos is importing the original plus the edited version of the photo, if a photo has been edited. And Photos tzk edn as square photos are edited versions. When you set your camera to take the photos in the square aspect ratio, the photo will be taken in the 4:3 ratio, then cropped to 1:1. Your iPhone is storing both the uncropped original plus the cropped, square version. This is a feature, not a bug. We can always revert our photos to the original and discard the edits.

Did you select a special aspect ratio for your photos, such as square? When I take a single photo in "square" mode after fully syncing my phone and Mac, the next sync says it is syncing two items.

However, Photos on my Mac is only showing me a single added item. I'm using iCloud Photos to handle the synchronization of photos among my devices, but there are multiple other methods that may behave differently. What method are you using?

Yes I use different aspect ratios for different items I take pics of. I just want 1 picture! It's the most basic and simple thing I can think of. Is there way to turn this function off?

I am just importing with a cable from my phone to my imac in photos app. I'm not using icloud. I have turned off on both devices.

Also I have noticed the gallery in my phone is completely correct and only has 1 pic in correct ratio but on my computer there are 2.. also it does not always generate 2. Some have only 1 and some have 2..

I suspect you have found a bug in either the import or the interpretation of the result. (It should import both versions, but continue to treat them as one.)

Can you tell is what version of iOS you have on your iPhone and what version of macOS you have on your iMac? Somebody who uses the cable import method may know whether this problem is common to that combination of systems. (As I said, I don't use cable import from my iPhone.)
