My new MBP repeatedly fails to recognize my new iPhone.

Every time I plug my iPhone into my MacBook Pro I have to provide my passcode on my iPhone. Is there something I need to do and am not doing correctly, in order to get the two to recognize each other? There's no bluetooth recognition, like other peripherals, but I'm not sure this is a related issue.

iPhone 5s, iOS 12
