I spent hours trying to get things back. Is there a magic button I can push when this happens again.

Maybe. Investigate that iMac's Accessibility features: Use accessibility features on Mac - Apple Support. For example, there might be a key combination or trackpad gesture setting that results in enlarging the entire screen. You can reset those settings to defaults (everything de-selected).
