Smart Mailboxes no longer working after Sonoma 14.5 update

I just updated to Mac OS Sonoma 14.5 and none of my smart mailboxes are working in Mail. I've quit Mail, restarted my MacBook, and rebuilt mailboxes but nothing works. I've searched but haven't found any evidence of a bug in 14.5. Is anybody else having this issue? Does anybody know of a fix?

Yeah, it’s not really the Mail data although that’s the name of the folder. It is all of the indexes and things that uses to synchronize across iCloud. Your actual messages are in sub folders at the same level as maildata.

Removing the account should remove all references in all of those configuration files and indexes, then adding it back will put new copies of all of the information in there.

Me too! Any way to re-install Mail?

Yes, reinstall macOS. It wouldn't change anything, though. None of the configuration data is stored with the app or within macOS. It's in your Data.

If it is an IMAP account, remove it and re-add it. That will rebuild the index and everything should return as it was.

You likely need to remove every account (assuming IMAP) and delete the ~/Library/Mail/V10/MailData folder as well.

That should reset Mail completely.

Hi All,

Same issue and tried the above. Worked initially, however after rebooting into normal mode the smart mailboxes weren't accurate and missing some emails. Also when I rebooted the computer this morning we are back to the smart mailboxes not working anymore! I cant keep rebooting into safe made mode with every startup!


Smart mailboxes are an essential part of my mail workflow and it's very frustrating that this has stopped working!
