Bluetooth pairing iPhone 12 (iOS 17.5.1) with Macbook Pro (Monterey 12.7.5) fails

Bluetooth settings on Macbook show iPhone as available, but not connected. When right-click to "Connect" it fails. On the iPhone, bluetooth settings do not show Macbook under either My DEVICES or OTHER DEVICES until I turn off bluetooth on iPhone, then back on. My Macbook shows under OTHER DEVICES, and when I try to connect, I get alert "Pairing Unsuccessful Mark's Macbook Retina 2015 is unsupported." Oddly, I was able to connect them when booted under Mojave (10.4.1)

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 12.7

Bluetooth pairing an iPhone or iPad and a Mac is not supported.

If you are attempting to use Handoff/Continuity or AirDrop, that does involve Bluetooth but the devices are NOT paired; Bluetooth just needs to be on and the devices in range of each other. The following may help with Handoff/Continuity issues: Continuity features and requirements on Apple devices - Apple Support
