"Display"in setting shows "apple display setting error (com.apple.extensionKit.errorDomain error 15.)" and goes blank.

June.02.2024

Hello Everyone,

I read many posts about the same Error Code "apple display setting error (com.apple.extensionKit.errorDomain error 15.)" but in different situations. I have a 27" 5k iMac, 2017 and I recently bought a 27" Apple display with Thunderbolt 2 at a garage sale without knowing if it works. The monitor has power and other cables with it. I spent $50 to get the correct cable to connect it to my iMac. It does have power to charge phones connected to it but the screen/image does not come up.

When I go to Setting and click on Display to add a second monitor, I get this message "apple display setting error (com.apple.extensionKit.errorDomain error 15.)" and window closes and goes blank. I see the display setting for 1 second but goes off.

iMac runs Ventura 13.6.7 and a few other settings are not available anymore. How can I fix this problem because I would love to find out if the monitor is fine and use it.

Someone please help me out.

Thanks

I have no idea about the error code. Most macOS error codes are not documented AFAIK.

I find the most common problem with these Apple Displays are their cables at the plug connection which tends to break due to the cable being bent or from people pulling on the cable instead of the connector to disconnect the display. Many times you can see the cable is bent at the plug or can notice something is not quite right.

I've also seen Apple suggest using a separate Thunderbolt cable to connect the Mac to the back of the display which can overcome some issues as well.

Otherwise, you have probably discovered by why someone was selling the display....because it has a hardware issue of some sort.

Thanks, Kaz, I tried the Display with a Dell laptop with Thunderbolt 3/ USB C cable, and no image came up.

What I meant about the Display setting, it is on my iMac. So, the Display setting just disappears and gives the error 15 code.

How do I get rid of the error code and be able to see and change the Display setting on my iMac? That might solve the problem.

Any idea about the error code?
