Why doesn't Time Machine back up the data files for Quicken? My Mac Air died and with it the Quicken data files that Quicken "backed up" but only on the computer's own hard drive.

External drives are excluded by default from the Time Machine backups. You would have to remove them from the exclusion list for them to be backed up: Exclude files from a Time Machine backup on Mac - Apple Support.
Time Machine backs up everything on your Mac except the operating system and a few temporary files.
If you are saying that you had files on an external drive connected to your Mac, you would have needed to have set up Time Machine to back up that drive using Time Machine. The drive would not have been backed up by default by Time Machine.
Most everything on my Mac Air is stored on the Cloud, but apparently not the Quicken backup files. Is there a way to send those backups to my iCloud documents or somewhere safer than the hard drive in my laptop where Quicken puts them by default?
