stop opening mutltiple files when opening one file Mac OS Sonoma

when opening a photo file or a text file, multiple files previously viewed open also. I only want to open the one file - how do I tell the machine to open only the file I am clicking?

Were the files open when you previously quit the application?

There is an option at Apple menu > Desktop & Dock > Close windows when quitting an application. If you turn that option on, any windows that you leave open when quitting an app will not reopen when you next open that app.

By default, macOS works like iOS. Documents remain open until they are closed. Launching apps does not change this. If you open a new document, it will launch the appropriate app, along with any documents that you had open in that app the last time you used it.

You have two options:

1) Adapt to the system. Get used to manually closing documents when you're done with them.

2) Go to Settings > Desktop & Dock and turn on "Close windows when quitting an application"

Hi FoxFifth,

The system setting you mentioned is turned on and has been for some time. And multiple files are still opening. I have been getting in the habit of closing apps with Command-Option-Q to close all windows on that app. I have tried closing all of the windows and then quitting the app - and yet multiple files still open. This frustrating me almost to the point of despair. I have tried contacting Apple Support several times to find a solution to this and requested a call back which they say will happen within two minutes and, I've been waiting over an hour for the call back. Even requested a second call back and that never came, either.

The only thing I can think of is that I had that happen once when I forgot that I had the "Silence unknown callers" option turned on in my iPhone.
