iPhone 8 connects to internet via WiFi but not thru ATT Wireless network. Seems it started happening intermittently after an IOS update. ATT said prolly bc Apple is sunseting my model but don’t really know.

Do you use VPN? If so, delete the VPN profile in Settings/General/VPN & Device Management/VPN. Don't just turn it off; delete the profile.
And the AT&T rep just wanted to get you off the phone; Apple is not sunsetting the iPhone 8. They actually still support the iPhone 6, 6S and 7.
Classic tech support.
Blame the other guy rather than troubleshooting the issue. Ask for a senior support person at AT&T.
