Complaint Regarding Unclaimed Property Handling in Apple Cash Account

I figured that I just want to share my experience with the community so that y'all can check your Apple Cash status to avoid hassles I am experiencing.

Dear Apple Community,

I am writing to express my deep dissatisfaction with the recent handling of my Apple Cash account and the subsequent complications I have encountered.

I have been a regular user of Apple Cash, with a consistent inflow of funds from Apple Card cashback earned through my purchases on various websites. While the amounts are not substantial, I always have some balance every month. My Apple Cash account is linked to my Apple ID, meaning Apple has access to my personal details, including my phone number and email address.

This past weekend, I attempted to use Apple Pay at a store and received a notification from Apple Cash indicating that I needed to provide my ID to continue using the service. I completed this request on Sunday. However, I was alarmed to see that my Apple Cash account balance was $0. I should have had a balance from my Apple Card cashback rewards.

Initially, I thought the $0 balance might be due to a temporary freeze for ID verification. However, the balance remained unchanged, and I noticed a transaction last Wednesday for $170, which I believe was my account balance at that time.

I called Apple Cash to investigate, and to my shock, I was informed that my account had been marked as inactive for an extended period (the duration varies by state) and, as per regulations, the balance had been transferred to the state as unclaimed property. This transfer happened last Wednesday, just before I received the notification to upload my ID. I was advised to contact a company named Green Dot Corporation to reclaim my money.

Here are my arguments against this mishandling:

  1. My Account Was Not Inactive: My account has had a steady inflow of transactions, which should clearly indicate activity.
  2. Lack of Communication: Apple Cash has multiple ways to contact me, yet I received no prior notification about this action. If they could notify me to upload my ID last weekend, they certainly could have informed me before transferring my funds.
  3. Privacy Concerns: Now, I am forced to provide personal information (such as my date of birth, address, SSN, and occupation) to an unfamiliar company to claim my own money. This raises serious privacy concerns.
  4. Customer Consideration: As a financial service provider, Apple Cash should prioritize the convenience and security of its customers. Forcing customers to deal with a third party like Green Dot Corporation to reclaim their funds is far from considerate or efficient.

In summary, Apple Cash has mishandled my account and created unnecessary complications. I urge Apple to review and correct their procedures regarding unclaimed properties to prevent similar issues for other customers.

Just for clarity, Apple will be unlikely to ever read your post above. Apple Support Community is a public discussion forum for fellow Apple users to connect and assist each other. I’ve provided contact information below.

If you’ve been a regular user of Apple Cash, you’re the victim of a clerical error and some misunderstandings on your part and this complicates your situation.

Bank are federally and state regulated. They must obey the regulations of the states they do business in. Abandoned and unclaimed funds must be turned over to state authorities when the account goes dormant or inactive. The minimum time frame I’ve heard of is 5 months, but most states are several years. Banks are regularly inspected by state and federal regulators to insure they are in compliance.

Apple is not a bank and really has no role in your situation. Apple is regulated, just not as a bank. Apple partners with Green Dot Bank to provide financial services such as Apple Cash. This entire time Green Dot is who you’ve been dealing with. They are unknown to you, but then you agreed to their terms and conditions (https://applecash.greendot.com/termsconditions/) when you signed up for Apple Cash. I’m not trying to hide behind <fine print> but it is the reality of the situation. You privacy concerns are pretty much out the window when in comes to modern day banking unless you new savings account is in your mattress.

However, Apple was looking out for your privacy by not providing contact information until required by law. You can’t have it both ways. Apple tried to protect your privacy, but then you wanted them to provide information when it meant not inconveniencing you. It’s impossible for Apple to provide both security and the convenience you think is due. When it comes to banking, transparency rules the day. If anything, that’s where both companies have perhaps failed.

The lack of communication was because you never identified yourself to Green Dot Bank. I know, all the excuses, no time, no need, not want, no hurry, etc. Green Dot didn’t have you contact information and Apple couldn’t provide it (you never gave them permission to share).

I agree that moving forward a time frame needs to be established for reminding customers to verify their identity. Currently the notification is triggered by a dollar amount. The total transfer of funds for a non-verified account is just under $500. When that limit is reached, the account is frozen and that usually triggers the customer to contact Apple.

Currently Apple urges people to complete the process, but can’t force you to read the terms and conditions and educate yourself about the services you just agreed to. It’s up to individuals to take it upon themselves to perform the due diligence required to be an educated consumer. Apple publishes several support articles on the subject.

If the funds are truly unclaimed they were turned over to the state. Normally, the funds are received by the Secretary of State, but some states are organized differently. A support team member will be able to advise you on which state the funds were turned over to. I’ve helped dozens of people recover unclaimed funds over the years from life insurance, bank accounts, down payments and other financial services. Literally, states hold billions of dollars in unclaimed funds.
