Macbook Air Speaker Crackling

I had a light water spill which gave me some issues in the right speaker of my 2018 Macbook Air. Whenever I start a video/audio player, the speaker hisses until sound actually starts playing. This happens even if muted. Then when any sounds play including startup and system sounds, the right speaker crackles and sometimes pops when tracks are changing. I replaced the speaker and the problem seems to have stayed exactly the same, so I'm pretty confused as this seems like a pretty clear water-in-speaker problem. Any thoughts?
