Delayed action stabilization!

The Stabilization section in the Inspector was greyed out in spite of the tick box and the clip in the timeline being selected.

I fiddled around a bit to no avail and finally found an old thread from this forum where someone had a similar problem but said that if he used some other app and then went back to FCP the Stabilization was working.

At that point I closed Safari and sure enough, the Stabilizer was working.

So I tried it with another clip and that was greyed out, so I just sat around thinking about it for a couple of minutes when suddenly out of the corner of my eye I saw the image in the Viewer "jump."

The Stabilizer in the Inspector was no longer greyed out and everything was working as normal.

So it appears that on my system (and also the OP's) there is a delay of a few minutes before the Stabilizer starts working.

Any ideas about this strange behaviour?

iMac 27″ 5K, macOS 13.6

Yes, motion analysis takes longer than just about any other type of analysis process. Watch the background task indicator, it'll work until the ENTIRE master clip is analyzed, not just the segment you're using. This is perfectly normal behavior, has always been this way. The longer and more movement in a clip, the longer it takes to analyze. I use this function quite often, and have never seen it react instantaneously.

Problem solved!

Out of the corner of my eye I noticed that there were some background tasks occurring.

Once the Transcoding and Analysis had finished the Stabilizer stopped being greyed out.

It seems rather counter-intuitive that this process should be going on whilst the Stabilizer is greyed out and therefore apparently not working.

This phenomenon appears on both my 2017 iMac and my M2 mini so is it normal?

The words “Analyzing for dominant motion” also appear near the bottom of the viewer. Perhaps you missed that?

I too hardly ever use it.

My interpretation is that it is greyed out until it is ready, because the analysis can (as you noticed) take quite some time to finish. It would perhaps be more confusing you switched from one option to another, and nothing were to happen because the underlying analysis was still in progress.
