Moving From PC to Mac - Migration Questions

I am a iPad and iPhone user currently using a PC but will be changing over to either a iMac or Mac Mini in a couple weeks. I have concerns about whether or not to use Migration Assistant.

My photo library on my PC is already uploaded to my iCloud account. Question #1-Will Migration Assistant allow me to omit transferring photos to avoid having duplicates? I also have iTunes on my PC containing approx 1,500 songs ripped off of cd's. Question #2-Will Migration copies these songs into a Music folder on the Mac? The files on my PC are contained in a multitude of folders and subfolders. Question #3-Will Migration Assistant duplicate the exact PC filing structure on the Mac?

I hope the following answers your questions. I am providing a step-bt-step process to do your migration. Migration Assistant is very easy to use. Be sure to read and follow its instructions. Basically, the process is as follows.

You first begin by starting the process of setting up your new computer. You will be asked if you wish to transfer files. Respond YES and follow the instructions you will be given.

·      Download and install Migration Assistant in your PC and turn it on.

·      You will be told to turn both computers on and activate Migration Assistant in the old computer.

·      The computers should be connected with a cable to facilitate the transfer. Wi-Fi is not suited for a transfer of so much data and corruption often results. If you must use it, make sure the two computers are located close together.

·      You will be given several options of what to transfer. You will likely want to transfer your settings and preferences.

·      You can transfer all or none of your files. You do not have an option to select certain files to transfer. If you wish to do that, then do so manually. And you will need to install any needed apps such as Microsoft Office so you can access the files you transfer.

·      The old computer's operating system will not be affected. No data from the old computer is erased.

·      Allow for up to an hour for the transfer process to complete once you start it.

·      It should set up the new computer the same as the old one but I would carefully check to verify the transfers.

·      When that is successful, you can log into the new Mac with the new user account you have set up. I strongly advise you to write down the new Apple password and the Mac access password for future reference..

Enjoy your new Mac.

I hope this is helpful. Good luck.

I don’t have any experience with Migrating from Windows, and I’m not sure what it will do with a referenced iTunes Library. My guess it will import it into the Music Library because that is the default behavior.

For Photos, if you already have iCloud Photos, just enable it when you sign into iCloud. I think the default is to download full versions, but if you don’t want that, you can turn it off in Photos Settings (Optimize storage).

You could creat a new admin account on startup (not using the account name from Windows), then try Migration. If it doesn’t work the way you want, just manually populate your original account. Set up Music to have a referenced Library (turn off copy music to Library) then import from the folders you manually transferred. Then, remove the migrated account.

Hopefully, someone with actual experience with your issues can post a better solution.
