Any problems with OS 14.5 on your iMac?

I am currently running Ventura 13.6.7 on my 2019 iMac. I always wait to update my OS until late in the update cycle. I am inquiring as to what are the major flaws/problems that people are encountering with Sonoma 14.5

Thanks in advance

You should look carefully at your Mac to see what is installed. Consider whether your software is compatible with Sonoma. Look especially at "custom" software, such as software that provides third party utilities for external drives, VPN, "security" or antivirus, special "cleaner" apps that can remove or delete files a bit too easily sometimes, or anything that might require updating before running under a new MacOS. Tools like TechTool Pro often need updates before use on a new MacOS. Some printer or scanner drivers need to be updated. Keep in mind that every Apple Store is full of Macs running the latest MacOS but those Macs don't have much if any third party software. Of course, what is the point if one can't install third party software, but also keep in mind that large companies such as Adobe (CC) and Microsoft (365) already have updated versions before a new MacOS is even released.

We have thousands of Macs on Sonoma where I work, Sonoma is in fact mandated by the employer. All running smoothly, to my knowledge. I think with millions of Sonoma users out there, yet one sees some small number of people reporting issues in Discussions, it seems that those issues reported are almost always linked to either third party software that is incompatible, or rarely some kind of hardware issue that crops up around the time that they migrate to Sonoma. Also, look carefully at external peripherals, such as docks, hubs, etc. that might require a firmware update for the new MacOS. I recommend never using third party external drive tools because those drives sometimes cannot be accessed with a new Mac OS due to software incompatibility.

Sometimes people say "everything was fine until I updated to Sonoma." That often is due to something installed that is incompatible with Sonoma, so it worked fine before but not after.

First thing that jumps

It the machine configured with a Fusion Drive or only an SSD Drive

Fusion Drives were good for Additional Storage Capacity but are and will be slower than an SSD drive

The very nature of a Spinner / Traditional Rotational Drive will never match the speed and performance of an SSD Drive

Software wise, much like others have mentioned

Using a M1 machine that came with macOS 11 Big Sur and has moved through each and every newer version including macOS 14 Sonoma. No Issues

Also a M2 started with macOS 13 Ventura and is presently with Sonoma - again no issues

Lastly, M3 started with Sonoma - None at all

If one is that concerned about the possible upGrade from Ventura to Sonoma

To truly protect your non replaceable Data - have a 3-2-1 Rescue Plan in place and always current

3 Backups using 2 methods and 1 off site incase of natural disaster or un-natural disaster.

Each of the above should be done to a Dedicated Single Purposed External Drive

This late in the Development of macOS 14 Sonoma, most of the bugs have been ironed out

If there are issues, more often than not.

Most issue are Self Inflicted issues by not doing their due diligence on what Third Party Software has been installed on this computer

To avoid the question / answer and question answer scenario

Restart in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

Safe Mode will also eliminate Third Party Software, extensions and drivers from loading.

It will only load the Minimum amount of Core Apple Processes to allow the the computer to function at a reduced Level of Performance

Does the issue present in this mode ?

Sometimes a Safe Boot followed by a Normal Boot will just put things right.

If not - there could be something in the main User Account playing up. To further isolate this - Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac. Then log out of the Main User account and log into the dummy account and test again if the issue persists.

If the issue is present in the dummy account - then, this appears to be a System Wide issue on the computer.

If so, report back for additional suggestions on trouble shooting this issue

I know that. I am just trying to find out what issues, if any, that people have had so I can be prepared.

I have had none on any version of Sonoma. I don’t install system modifications and don’t have any unsupported hardware that requires a system modification.

I also don’t use expensive software that breaks at each upgrade and the developer can’t keep up with Apple’s development cycle.
