How to Annotate Email with Apple Pencil

I would like to mark up an email received, or a reply, with underlines or circled text or highlighting. I have followed older posts, but they do not allow me to mark up an original email or a reply. I don’t want to mark up a pdf that’s attached, or insert a separate drawing - I want to make notes on the email itself.
