I'm trying to restore an iPhone, but the process keeps failing and each time, it automatically deletes the IPSW and I have to wait 45 minutes while the IPSW downloads again.
Back in the day, you could save the IPSW to your drive. Is this not possible anymore?

If it fails the IPSW file is corrupt, so there would be no point in saving it. When you choose to Update with iTunes or Finder you have a choice to download and install or to download only. That might be what you are recalling about downloading the IPSW. You might try ipsw.me.
