Right Click or Control Click on Desktop not working

I notice now that right click or control click on my desktop is not bringing up secondary click menu. It works in any application and even finder. Just not working on my 16" MacBook Pro, M3 Pro screen or external monitor.

This is a brand new MacBook, it upgraded to Mac OS Sonoma 14.5 during initial setup. (I have had this MacBook for a week)

Right click was working in the beginning, I used it to change my desktop wallpaper.

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 14.5

Hello PRP_53,

Thank-you for taking the time to reply. It is much appreciated.

Yes, all my settings for secondary click, both Mouse and keyboard were correct. After thinking about why it stopped working, I thought it might be software I installed that may have impacted this.

I dug deeper and dragged out my previous MacBook Pro (13" i7 intel model) that also runs Sonoma 15.5. It turns out the right click was working. The clue was when I clicked on desktop, it cleared to show desktop.

I have resolved this issue as my new MacBook Pro M3, was set not to "show items" on desktop in "Desktop & Dock" settings. When checking this option, the control click and right click was restored.

I'm happy I get to keep this MacBook. It's really a great machine.

Thanks Again.

Using the Trackpad to perform this action ?

Change Trackpad settings on Mac

Secondary click >> Choose the gesture to use to secondary click (or Control-click) items on the screen.

Using an Apple Magic Mouse ?

Right-click on Mac

None of the above work on " I have had this MacBook for a week "
