Why can't I install Strava on Apple Watch SE with ios 10.5???

I purchased an Apple Watch SE with ios 10.5 and cellular data for my son. I use an iPhone Xr with ios 17.5.1 and have strava installed on iPhone, but it does not show up in the "my watch" app to force install from there. On the watch, when I go to App store and search strava, I can see the app but it says "Requires iPhone" and the 'get' button is greyed out so I can't install it. This is insanely frustrating. How can I make the watch install the Strava app so my son can use it to record activities.

I've been trying to figure this for HOURS today and after multiple hours of googling and scouring reddit and Strava's site, this is the first time I found a clear answer to this very question. This is very frustrating and seems like it would be a relatively easy feature to add in. We also setup the watch as a family member watch hoping it would allow him to use Strava on his account, but paired with my phone with the Strava app logged in as him.
