Why is my watch taking so long to search for an update?

The watch doesn't look for updates, that is done on your iPhone.
Open Watch app on iPhone - General - Software Update
If you continue to have problems please update IOS on the iPhone first, then fully re-start the watch and follow the steps noted above.
