I want a fully clean startup with no apps opening.
See instructions from this Apple Support document: Prevent apps and windows from reopening on Mac - Apple Support
There are two parts:
1) Deselect ”Reopen windows when logging back in” in the confirmation dialog that appears when you log out of your Mac or restart.
And then:
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings.
- Click Desktop & Dock in the sidebar.
- Scroll down on the right and turn on “Close windows when quitting an app.”
All advice is to open settings>general>login items and toggle off what you don't want. But IT DOESN'T WORK!!!!
It works all right. It was just completely wrong and does something totally different. Undo whatever changes you made in that interface and never use it again. It's a long story, but this will break any 3rd party apps that are listed. That's literally the point of this interface. Don't ask me why. But if you want the apps in that window to work properly, they should be enabled. If you don't want those apps to run, then uninstall them.
In very rare cases, this user interface can be useful, but it's very rare.
