How can I fix a slow Delete/Backspace Key on Mac?

I have been trying to troubleshoot the delete/backspace key being extremely slow. It is much faster to continually hit the key than to hold it down. I am using an Apple BT keyboard with my MacBook Pro but have the same problem using the delete key on the MacBook Pro itself. Obviously I can use my mouse and highlight/delete but sure would like the delete key to work like it should. Any help is greatly appreciated as I have looked for fixes to no avail.
