Wiping it clean and returning it to factory settings protects your privacy and ensures a smooth experience for the new owner. Here's how to do it:

Before We Begin:

  • Back up your data: This is crucial if you don't want to lose files on that Mac. Use Time Machine or another method to save your files, photos, and applications.
  • Sign out of iCloud: Go to System Preferences > iCloud and sign out of your account. This disassociates your Apple ID from the machine.

Entering Recovery Mode:

  1. Power down your iMac completely.
  2. Restart while holding Command (⌘) + Option (⌥) + R keys together.
  3. Keep holding until you see the Apple logo or a spinning globe. This boots into Internet Recovery Mode.

Wiping the Drive and Reinstalling macOS:

  1. From the macOS Utilities window, choose Disk Utility.
  2. Select your main hard drive (usually named "Macintosh HD") from the sidebar.
  3. Click Erase.
  4. Choose a name for the erased disk (e.g., "Macintosh HD") and format it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
  5. Click Erase and confirm.
  6. Quit Disk Utility.

Reinstalling macOS:

  1. Back in macOS Utilities, select Reinstall macOS.
  2. Choose Continue and follow the on-screen instructions. The iMac will download and reinstall the latest version of macOS / OSX that the computer can run.
  3. This process may take a while, so be patient.

Once the Reinstallation is Complete:

  • The iMac will restart, setting up like a new device.
  • You won't see any of your previous data or settings.

Additional Tips:

  • Make sure you have a stable internet connection for downloading macOS during Internet Recovery.
  • For added security, consider using a secure erase option in Disk Utility (if available for your specific model). This takes longer but makes data recovery more difficult.

By following these steps, your 2015 iMac will be completely wiped and ready for its new owner to create their own user account.

The_Knowlege_Seeker's instructions are far more refined for your iMac model, then the all inclusive Apple article.

If you are having trouble getting started up in Recovery Mode using your wireless keyboard and mouse?

Then dig out, barrow or buy a inexpensive USB keyboard to reset the iMac.
