Why won't my text boxes link???

So I'm trying to learn how to use Pages to replicate a simple newsletter I used to do in Quark Xpress. All is going well except I can't link a fourth text box to the three I somehow established. I've read the directions many times and tried to follow them, but it won't add the fourth text box at the end of the first three. It changes the fourth text box to the first. Please advise.

Try inserting a Text box, and clicking its top indicator to set it to ❶, enter the second Text box and repeat this process to set it to ❷, and repeat this process for the third and fourth Text boxes. Select all Text boxes and on the Arrange panel, select Text Wrap None. Drag to separate your four Text boxes so their numbering is visible, and then paste your content in the first Text box. It will then flow through intermediary Text boxes to the fourth.

Unlike Pages '09, the linked Text boxes in Pages now do not support reverse linking to a lower Text box number.

I just successfully performed the first paragraph steps in Pages v14 on macOS 14.5.

I just created a four-page Pages document by clicking four Insert Page break entries. Then, I selected Facing pages.

With thumbnails on, I systematically inserted four Text boxes, one to a page in page order. Back to page 1, I clicked the link circle on the first Text box and it became ❶, then repeated this for each Text box, and on the fourth page, it became ❹.

Back on the first page, I clicked on the first Text box and pasted sufficient text content so that it would flow through all Text boxes, which it did with the fourth containing appropriate text.

So, that is the way that worked correctly for me.

I tried what you said, but the document I'm working on has facing pages: pages 4 and 1 on the first page (left and right of a legal page), and pages 2-3 on the second page, left and right. The first text box is on page 1, which continues in a text box on page 2 then that continues in a text box on page 3. When I try to link it to a text box on page 4, however, Pages renames the text box on page 4 to the number 1! There's got to be a way to make the page 4 text box stay number 4.
