Apple Watch SE as location instead of iPad on Family setup

There have been many posts on this and no good answers. Today I solved it, but apple locked all the prior posts, like this one: Apple Watch SE default location - Apple Community

Scenario: Kid has iPad set up with Apple family. Works fine. Parental controls in place. Kid gets Apple Watch SE, and we follow all the official directions and get it set up and working. Works fine… except…

Problem: location for FindMy cannot be changed to watch. It always defaults to iPad, which is always at home.

We know we can see it in “Devices” but want it to say where the person is.

ANSWER:

  1. On the kids iPad, open Settings > Privacy & Security toggle off the switch for “Share my Location” (Watch a couple minutes to ensure settings propagate across devices.)
  2. On the kids watch, open “Find People” toggle on “Share my Location” make sure “Send From” is “This Apple Watch”

I have struggled with this for so long. I hope people can fine and use this since no Apple posts or forum posts I’ve come across have helped.
